On the other hand, scientists found a new way to regenerate stem cells.

Stem cells are the master cells in the body; they have the ability to regenerate tissue overtime. The scientists used cells from frozen bloods to create induced pluripotent stem cells or iPS Cells – pluripotent stem cells are the descendants of totipotent cells. iPS cells were made from plugs of skin during the past. Patients today opt to store and freeze their bloods rather than go through a procedure to cut skins from their body.

Judith Staerk, a scientist form the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research in Massachusetts said that “blood is the easiest, most accessible source of cells, patients opt to have 20 milliliters of blood drawn from them than go through a biopsy procedure to get skin cells.”

iPS cells are created by activating 3 or 4 genes that are similar to the embryonic stem cells in our body. iPS cells can be used to study diseases like cancer, aids, neurodegenerative disease, etc. and this iPS cells can also save other patients lives by using other people’s frozen blood that are still viable to process to make stem cells.
