The Senate confirmed Kirstjen Nielsen as the next secretary of the Department of Homeland Security on a 62-37 vote on Tuesday.

The Washington Post reported Trump nominated Nielsen largely based on Kelly's advice and she has never led a federal agency or private company. She followed Kelly to the White House when the former Marine general replaced the beleaguered Reince Priebus as Trump's chief of staff. "She has been working in and around the Department of Homeland Security since its creation".

Nielsen said at her confirmation hearing last month that climate change is a crucial issue and said the Trump administration is revising its climate models to better respond to rising sea levels.

With more than a third of the Senate voting against her, Nielsen's margin of approval was the narrowest ever for the confirmation of a DHS secretary.

"As our country continues to face ever-evolving threats at home and overseas, it is critical - now more than ever - that we have an experienced and apolitical leader at the Department of Homeland Security to work with us in our efforts to keep New Hampshire and the United States safe, secure, and free", said Sen.

"Sec. Nielsen is a highly qualified leader who understands the importance of blending enhanced security policies with the message that America is open for business".

She also condemned white nationalism, rejected Islamophobia and promised to make cybersecurity a top priority. Bush. endorsed Nielsen's nomination.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced on September 5 that the DACA program will end in six months, giving Congress time to find a legislative solution for people enrolled in the program. Original DACA recipients were unaffected, and individuals who had received three year validity periods for DACA and the associated work authorization under the November 2014 memorandum prior to the district court injunction were allowed to maintain those approvals through their expiration, unless terminated or revoked for case specific reasons.
