U.S. Rep. John Conyers (D-Mich.) announced his retirement Tuesday, bringing to an end a more than five-decade run in the House.

He said he's endorsing his son, John Conyers III, to replace him in Congress. Conyers faced calls to resign following reports that he reached a $27,000 settlement with a former aide who said she was sacked for rejecting his sexual advances.

Melanie Sloan, a former Conyers aide and Washington lawyer, told The Washington Post last week that Conyers harassed and verbally abused her when she worked for his Washington office in the 1990s.

Conyers, the longest serving member of the House of Representatives, will announce on Tuesday he does not plan to run for re-election, USA media said following accusations of sexual harassment against the Michigan Democrat. Shortly thereafter, the RNC renewed their financial support of Roy Moore's campaign.

Those who support Conyers said there's a double standard for African American leaders, citing the ongoing sexual misconduct accusations facing Al Franken. "I hope my retirement will be viewed in the larger perspective of my record of service as I enter a new chapter", the statement from Conyers read.

"I'm now in Israel on a fact finding mission with African American leaders from the Midwest", Ian Conyers tweeted just minutes after his grand-uncle's radio interview ended. He has already stepped aside from his position as ranking member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee. A few days later, she finally stated she believed Conyers should resign. Williams said. "We are saying, 'Hell no.' We want him to run for as long as his health allows".

"This is about much more than one congressman", Grubbs' attorney, Lisa Bloom, said in an email after Conyers announced his resignation.

"I stand with my uncle in terms of his belief of no specific wrongdoing", he said.

Conyers called in to The Mildred Gaddis Show Tuesday morning from his hospital room with his attorney by his side. Conyers has denied all the allegations, and on Tuesday, wrote the accusations off as "politics".

"Whatever they are they are not accurate, they are not true, and I think that they are something that I can't explain where they came from", said Rep. Conyers.

"There can be no tolerance for behavior that subjects women to the kind of conduct that has been alleged", said Jerrold Nadler, who replaced Conyers in his leadership role on the House Judiciary Committee. Joe Barton, R-Texas, Blake Farenthold, R-Texas, and Sen.

When asked if Congress should disclose the details of settlements made by other lawmakers in cases of sexual misconduct or harassment, Conyers replied with "a strong, unequivocal yes". He will now be leaving the seat he's held since 1965.
