The ugly side of City Beautiful was mirrored in the National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) report for 2016, which was released on Thursday.

Majority of cases under crimes against women were reported under "Cruelty by Husband or His Relatives" (32.6%) followed by "Assault on Women with Intent to Outrage her Modesty" (25.0%), "Kidnaping & Abduction of Women" (19.0%) and "Rape" (11.5%). Cases under "crime against women" have reported a marginal increase in the year 2016 (3,38,954), it is a marginal increase compared to 2015 when 3,29,243 cases were reported. Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh reported the highest incidence of rape with 4,882 cases (12.5%) and 4,816 (12.4%) followed by Maharashtra 4,189 (10.7%) during 2016.

In the south, Karnataka figured on the list with 42 cases of communal violence while Kerala had 21 instances and Tamil Nadu had five communal incidents during the year 2016. Of the 994 rape cases reported in 2016, in 463 cases, the victims were minors.

Uttar Pradesh reported 14.5% (49,262) of total cases of crimes against women followed by West Bengal (9.6%) (32,513 cases) during 2016.

Delhi police officials claim that the main reason for the national capital recording the highest number of cases is that as compared to other cities of different states, there is "free and fair" registration of cases, particularly of heinous crimes.

The city police also registered 979 cases under the POCSOA, the second highest in metropolitan cities, the NCRB report said. Madhya Pradesh reported the highest number of cases of atrocities against STs accounting for 27.8% followed by Rajasthan with 18.2% (1,195 cases) and Odisha with 10.4% (681 cases). Mumbai also had the second highest number of rape cases, at 712 cases, after Delhi that had 1,996 cases.

Abduction cases declined from 1,402 in 2015 to 1,309 in 2016.

A new chapter on missing persons and children has been included to comply the Supreme Court directions along with a new table on cases related to Fake Indian Currency Notes, the NCRB report said.

Mumbai also stood first when it came to cyber crimes.

Among 19 metropolitan cities, which have a population of over 20 lakh, Mumbai accounted for 12.3 percent of the cases of crimes against women in 2016, with 5,128 of the total of 41,761 cases registered in the city.

Atrocities/crime against Scheduled Castes have increased by 5.5 per cent in 2016 (40,801) over 2015 (38,670), while atrocities/crime against Scheduled Tribes have increased by 4.7 per cent in 2016 (6,568) over 2015 (6,276).

Among the other states, Uttar Pradesh (UP) recorded the highest number of serious offences like murder.
