Gun background checks hit an all-time high on Black Friday

That's according to data from the Federal Bureau of Investigation that shows that Black Friday shoppers set a new record on the requests for background checks for gun sales with more than 200,000 applications, a new single day record, USA Today reported.

In total, there were 203,086 requests, which was up from the previous Black Friday highs of 185,713 in 2016 and 185,345 in 2015.

Gun checks, required for purchases at federally licensed firearm dealers, are not a measure of actual gun sales.

The 2015 record smashed the previous single-day mark set December 21, 2012, exactly one week after the Sandy Hook elementary school massacre in CT. Analysts note gun sales are likely the higher of the two figures because customers can buy several firearms in one transaction.

During the last few years of Barack Obama's presidency, the nation saw a spike in gun sales as second amendment proponents feared the passage of more restrictive legislation.

And even though gun sales were down during the first year of the Trump administration, gun sales tend to increase following mass shootings.

The review was ordered by Attorney General Jeff Sessions following revelations that a gun rampage at a Texas church which left 26 people dead was committed by a former U.S. airman who had been legally stripped of his right to own weapons.

Sessions said the November 5 shooting in Sutherland Springs, Texas, by Devin Kelley, a former Air Force serviceman who had a 2012 conviction for domestic assault, showed that not all the necessary information was being added to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System, or NICS.

As reported by USA Today, the number of requests does not necessarily match the number of guns that were purchased.

Prospective gun owners got more reason to move faster with purchases just as gunmakers ramped up their discounts. "Companies that are more anxious about making money than the safety of the public or law enforcement officials sworn to protect them shouldn't be given a platform to sell their products".
