CBS, Dish Network reach agreement resolving content fee dispute

Dish Network announced Thursday it has reached a multi-year agreement with CBS to resume carrying the network's owned and operated local stations, including KCBS-TV Channel 2, along with three cable networks, ending a three-day blackout.

"We are pleased we have reached a deal with DISH, who recognizes the value that the number one Network brings to viewers in these markets", said Ray Hopkins, President, Television Networks Distribution, CBS Corporation.

That scenario recently played out between CBS and DISH.

The dispute could also potentially affect the broadcasts of Saturday's Alabama-Auburn game and CBS' NFL coverage on Sunday. But both companies have now reached a multi-year deal after a blackout on CBS programming to two million subscribers for nearly three days. Dish says the channels are now being restored to its customers.

At the heart of the dispute is how much money Dish is willing to pay CBS to retransmit the network's signal. These alternatives make CBS widely available, without the need for a pay-TV subscription, which Dish has clearly taken issue with during these negotiations. The blackout happened late Monday night, the latest instance of CBS and Dish Network's business relations souring. This also isn't the first time CBS has vanished for millions of Dish subscribers. CBS last went dark on Dish for roughly 12 hours in 2014 during a similar impasse. Almost 4 million customers nationwide, in 18 different markets, are affected.

Besides Chicago, other affected markets were NY (where CBS owns WCBS and WLNY), Los Angeles (KCBS and KCAL), Philadelphia (KYW and WPSG), Dallas (KTVT and KTXA), San Francisco (KPIX and KBCW), Atlanta (WUPA), Boston (WBZ and WSBK), Seattle (KSTW), Tampa (WTOG), Detroit (WWJ and WKBD), Minneapolis (WCCO), Miami (WFOR and WBFS), Denver (KCNC), Sacramento (KOVR and KMAX), Pittsburgh (KDKA and WPCW) and Baltimore (WJZ).
