Federal prosecutors in NY charged Mesri with seven counts, including wire fraud, aggravated identity theft, computer hacking, and extortion.

Mesri has worked for the Iranian military to launch cyberattacks against Israel and has been a member of a Tehran-based hacking group called Turk Black Hat Security, which has conducted hundreds of website defacements against USA sites. He is now still believed to be in Iran, but USA officials are hoping the charges will deter anyone in the future of thinking of hacking into HBO, or any other major media company. The hacker, who used the online name Skote Vahshat, "conducted his attack on HBO in a methodical way", Kim said, adding that Mesri allegedly compromised multiple HBO employee accounts and used them to facilitate the transfer of what the hacker claims was 1.5 terrabytes of information to a server he controlled. Mesri had "previously hacked computer systems for the Iranian military", and allegedly "infiltrated HBO's systems, stole proprietary data, then sought to extort HBO of $6 million in Bitcoins", said Kim.

An Iranian man, Behzad Mesri, has been charged in the massive HBO hack and extortion scheme, NBC News reports. The indictment did not say whether Mesri was working on behalf of the Iranian government when he hacked HBO. Along with the Game of Thrones scripts, he also accessed unaired episodes of Ballers, Room 104, and Curb Your Enthusiasm, as well as a number of internal emails and financial documents. Officials will hold a press conference to formally announce the charges Tuesday afternoon. The decision to indict him is part of a "name and shame" strategy the USA government has used in the past to try to curb the work of foreign hackers it doesn't expect to apprehend. Nevertheless, the attorney said, the indictment sent a message to Mr Mesri and all other hackers that "they are not safe behind the anonymity of computer screens". While many fans thought it was too good to be true, HBO's worst fears were confirmed when Game of Thrones cast members like Nathalie Emmanuel tweeted their disapproval of people ruining the season for everyone.

"HBO was on [e] of our hard targets to deal with but we succeeded", he wrote in one July 23 email, according to the indictment. Just a year ago, he noted, the federal government charged seven Iranians with carrying out a cyber attack on dozens of United States banks on behalf of the Iranian government. The FBI has been unable to arrest him because he remains in Iran, Mr Kim said on Tuesday.
