It supports GPS, Wi-Fi-based positioning (WPS), and Cell ID, to provide accurate location information both indoors and outdoors, the company said.
For the uninitiated, NB-IoT licenses small amounts of LTE cellular spectrum to carry data for low-bandwidth devices. Samsung suggests that this can be useful for tracking down a vehicle if you forget where you parked.
"It can be attached to a young child's backpack so his or her whereabouts can be tracked, clipped to a dog's collar so it won't go missing, and secured to keys so they are never lost", Samsung wrote in a news release. Samsung claims it's the world's first consumer mobile product to use narrow band network technology.
Geo-fence is another notable feature of the Connect Tag, which works in coherence with Samsung's SmartThings ecosystem, to notify users' chosen smart devices whenever their kids, for example, enter or leave a predefined zone. You can, for instance, set up your Connect Tag to trigger specific smart devices like lights or your TV to turn on when you approach your home. Bear in mind that Connect Tag will only work with devices that run Android Marshmallow (6.0) or above. If you've given your tag to a child, they can use the tag to send you their location details, or you can set up location alerts to be sent to you periodically to track where they are.
Spanish ruling party threatens to jail Catalan leader if he declares independence
March organisers Societat Civil Catalana claimed 930,000 people turned out, but Barcelona police put the total at around 350,000. Other demonstrations - including in the Catalan city Barcelona - have also been held urging political dialogue.
Connect Tag will be showcased at the Samsung Developer Conference 2017 on October 18-19 at Moscone Center in San Francisco, California, United States.
The Connect Tag is under 2 inches by 1 inches (4.21cm by 1.19cm) and benefits from IP68 water- and dustproofing.
There's no word on pricing yet, but the Connect Tag will be sold initially in South Korea, in the coming months. Recently, Samsung announced the second price cut of its first smartphone to come with 6GB RAM, Galaxy C9 Pro. The battery can last for up to seven days on a single charge, minimizing the need to constantly swap out or plug in the device.
