Summary: Bengaluru:Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi today launched the Karnataka government's subsidised food canteens "Indira Canteen" here that would provide breakfast at Rs five and lunch and dinner at a cost of Rs 10. As per The Times of India, initially 101 Indira canteens will be opened in the Bengaluru city.

Congress Vice-President, Rahul Gandhi inaugurates the first canteen at Kanakanapalya in Jayanagar today at 11:30 AM.

Rahul later bought his breakfast from the canteen, for which he borrowed Rs 10 from Karnataka Home Minister G Parameswara.

To begin with, the state government is launching 101 Indira canteens, named after former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi's grandmother. Meanwhile, BJP corporators made a decision to boycott the inauguration of Indira Canteen. According to officials, the canteens will serve 500 plates of food for now, but this number is also expected to increase in the future. While the Indira canteen has primarily been started to serve the poor classes, they are open to everyone from local families to traveling backpackers.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had announced this ambitious project when he presented this year's budget in state Assembly on March 15, 2017. The CM said that the Congress government, by providing food at affordable price, has addressed the issue of hunger.

The police said while friends of the victims were in shock after the event, they had no idea what would have led to the incident. According to scanner traffic, three people were shot at point blank range and two victims were transported to the hospital.

The Congress vice-president confused Indira Canteens with the Amma Canteens of Tamil Nadu.

With this, each ward under the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike, the city corporation, will have an Indira Canteen.

"Programmes for the poor must be done in a hurry", Siddaramaiah said, clarifying that no playground or park was illegally encroached to set up the canteens.

Seeing as pretty much everyone has access to a smartphone in this day and ages, an app has also been launched which will help you track down the closest Indira Canteen in your vicinity.
