Blockbusters: Bills trade Sammy Watkins, Ronald Darby

For new Head Coach Sean McDermott, he's return No.1-level wide receiver Jordan Matthews from Philadelphia and cornerback E.J. Gaines from the Rams.

The Buffalo Bills announced two big trades on Friday, both of which involved swapping cornerbacks and receivers with NFC teams.

Darby, a former second-round pick of the Bills, had two solid seasons for Buffalo, but was seen as an ideal match for a man-cover scheme.

"Sammy has proven he can be a productive player and an explosive receiver in this league, we look forward to having him in a Rams uniform", Rams general manager Les Snead said in a news release. Something has got to give, and it's got to be Matthews playing on the perimeter.

The Bills never bottomed out as badly as the Browns in recent years, but Buffalo's impressive stash of draft selections rivals that of Cleveland, which is in full-blown rebuilding mode.

Taylor took a $10 million pay cut in March to stay with the Bills, saying at the time he was putting his trust in management to fill in pieces around him after Taylor dealt with a lackluster group of receivers over his first two seasons as the starter. Executive vice president of football operations Howie Roseman has a history of re-upping homegrown players early if they have been identified as part of the core. One ailment after the next has crept up in the months since. A recent report suggested some team employees believe Matthews could have practiced more but allowed his contract status to influence his decision-making, a charge that the Matthews strongly denied.

With Matthews gone, Smith should get an opportunity to be Philadelphia's No. 2, though he'll have to compete with Nelson Algohor, among others.

The emergence of young wideouts Marcus Johnson and Mack Hollins, along with Agholor's strong offseason, made Matthews expendable.

Darby automatically adds more depth to a secondary that was projected to start 2016 seventh-round pick Jalen Mills and veteran journeyman Patrick Robinson at cornerback.

Not coincidentally, Jim Schwartz was the defensive coordinator in Buffalo for Darby's rookie season.

"I'd love to have some continuity there".
