Dustin Fowler waited almost three hours to make his Major League Baseball debut on Thursday night for the Yankees, as rain in Chicago delayed their game against the White Sox. Fowler, in the lineup batting sixth, was due to lead off in the second inning.
Fowler arrived in the Yankees' clubhouse at 4:30 p.m. after sitting in a cab for 90 minutes, stuck in rush-hour traffic between O'Hare International Airport and Guaranteed Rate Field. The team announced that Fowler was scheduled to undergo surgery on his right knee last night at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago.
He was rated as the Yankees' best outfield prospect heading into the 2017 season. On June 29, 1905, Graham made his major-league debut as a Giants defensive replacement in the eighth inning. "Maybe you put up Plexiglass, so they can't flip over and people can look through it".
The young outfielder started in right field and was batting sixth in a game that began almost three hours later than expected due to a rain delay. Girardi told reporters that it appeared Fowler's knee hit an electrical box. The first baseman hit 41 homers last season for Milwaukee but just eight in 57 games with NY while batting.204 with 70 strikeouts.
"I'm very excited. Glad to be here", Fowler said before the game.
"I know what it takes to get here and how hard he's worked, and what's supposed to be a really exciting day for him turns into a really bad day", said Girardi, who choked up as he spoke.
Dustin Fowler had just arrived on the scene, the latest Yankees rookie called up to assist a club riddled with injury.
"It's one of the worst things I've seen on a baseball field", NY left fielder Brett Gardner said. "He's a damn good player and he continues to improve and I was looking forward to get a chance to play with him and just help him out along the way".
Dustin Fowler suffered an open rupture of his right patella tendon after colliding with the silver electrical box slightly above the top of the short wall seen in this photo. Andujar was optioned Thursday to Scranton so he can play third base regularly, according to Girardi.
In a corresponding move, Tyler Austin is headed to the disabled list.
"We've been through a lot in the past 10 days or so, and today was probably one of the tougher nights", Girardi said. First baseman Greg Bird has only played in 19 games this season because of ankle and shoulder woes.
The injuries continue to pile up for the Yankees, who have lost 14 of 16.
