The House Intelligence Committee will subpoena former national security adviser to US President Donald Trump Michael Flynn, in its investigation into alleged Russian interference in the 2016 elections.

"I said we would use whatever compulsory process we need", Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) said at a breakfast hosted by the Christian Science Monitor Wednesday morning, warning that the committee will explore further options for forcing Flynn's hand.

Meanwhile, the New York Times reported last week that Comey had described a conversation in February in which Trump asked him to drop the investigation of Michael Flynn, Trump's former national security advisor who was sacked for misleading Vice President Mike Pence about a conversation he had with the Russian ambassador.

U.S. intelligence sources said some Russians boasted about how well they knew Mr Flynn and others pushed to exploit Mr Manafort through his relationship with Viktor Yanukovych, the deposed president of Ukraine who was living in Russia and was an ally of Vladimir Putin.

A retired Army lieutenant general, Flynn became one of Trump's closest campaign advisers two months after he was paid in 2015 to speak at a Moscow gala, where he was seated next to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Trump fired Flynn in February after reports revealed Flynn met with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak and hid those discussions from White House officials, including Vice President Mike Pence.

On Tuesday, Brennan, the former CIA director, testified to the House intelligence panel that he had noticed enough contact between Trump associates and Russian Federation during the 2016 campaign to justify an investigation by the FBI.

Russian officials with indirect ties to both men were allegedly confident that the advisers could be used to help shape Trump's opinion of the country.

"I did not collude with the Russians to influence the elections".

In addition to the congressional scrutiny, Flynn is now a target of an FBI counterintelligence investigation, a federal probe in Virginia and a Defense Department inspector general's inquiry into the propriety of foreign payments he accepted.

But Burr disagreed and said the committee has sent a letter to Flynn's lawyers questioning the legal basis for his refusal to cooperate with the request for documents.

The Senate intelligence committee signaled in March that it was reviewing information about Kushner's Russian contacts and his role arranging meetings.

In his testimony, Mr Brennan said it became clear last summer that Russian Federation was attempting to interfere in the United States presidential election, and that he warned Alexander Bortnikov, the head of Russia's FSB security service that such interference would hurt the relationship with Washington.

Despite concerns about Trump interfering with ongoing investigations into his campaign, Schiff warned that it is premature for Democrats on Capitol Hill to push for impeachment.

This action by Trump was prompted upon learning that Federal Bureau of Investigation chief James Comey would begin investigating possible links to the Russian's involvement and their intentions to interfere in the election, thereby giving Trump an added advantage. The investigation into the case is now led by special counsel Robert Mueller, a former FBI chief.

Comey is expected to testify before an open session of the Senate Intelligence Committee about his interactions with the president at an open hearing following the Memorial Day holiday.
