The Yomiuri Shimbun In response to repeated ballistic missile launches by North Korea, the government is considering strengthening its measures against the isolated nation, particularly through "secondary sanctions", which would target enterprises and banking institutions from third-party countries, including China, with connections to North Korea, according to sources.

North Korea said on Monday that Sunday's launch met all technical requirements that could allow mass-production of the missile, which it calls the Pukguksong-2, although US officials and experts questioned the extent of its progress.

South Korea's military fired warning shots at a suspected drone from North Korea on Tuesday amid tension over Pyongyang's latest missile test which drew worldwide condemnation and a warning from China.

That test, according to a White House statement, should "serve as a call for all nations to implement far stronger sanctions against North Korea". Analysts said that test showed gave North Korea critical information on developing a re-entry vehicle for nuclear warheads and showed Pyongyang had a missile capable of striking the U.S. territory of Guam.

The latest test confirmed the reliable late-stage guidance of the Pukguksong-2 missile's warhead and the functioning of its solid-fuel engine, the KCNA state news agency said.

Experts said that rocket flew higher and for a longer time than any other missile previously tested by North Korea and represents another big advance toward a viable ICBM.

10am BST: The missile flew about 310 miles (500 kilometres) and is believed to have landed in waters off its east coast, South Korea's military said.

Solid-fuel missiles have their fuel loaded before being moved into place, allowing them to be launched faster and with more secrecy.

The condemnation came a day before the UNSC was set to convene an emergency meeting to discuss the North's missile and nuclear threats.

Liquid-fuel missiles, on the other hand, are fueled at the launch site in a process that can last an hour, making it easier to spot and easier to destroy than the solid-fuel variety.

In spite of that, North Korea has launched 11 ballistic missiles this year alone. That makes them easier to spot and easier to destroy.
