Portland chefs Mike Wiley and Andrew Taylor win Beard award

(All four of these L.A. chefs are fixtures on Jonathan Gold's list of 101 Best Restaurants.) The award went to Corey Lee of Benu in San Francisco.

Nora Pouillon, of D.C.'s Restaurant Nora, received the 2017 James Beard Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award.

If you recall, Seattle's own Edouardo Jordan, who just last week opened his second restaurant JuneBaby, was a finalist for Best Chef Northwest, as were Rachel Yang and Seif Chirchi. In April, Rico Torres and Diego Galicia, of Mixtli, were names among Food & Wine magazine's 12 Best New Chefs in the U.S.

Margarita Manzke of Republique, nominated for Outstanding Pastry Chef, was edged out by Ghaya Oliveria of Daniel in New York City.

The restaurant is owned by Rick Bayless and Deann Bayless, whose Frontera restaurant in Chicago won the award in 2007.

Chefs consider a James Beard Award to be the most prestigious cooking honor they can get. "We have in our restaurants always sought to put heart first".

Sam Calagione of Dogfish Head Craft Brewery, which is located in nearby Milton, Delaware, earned the Outstanding Wine, Spirits or Beer Professional award. It was Ortega's sixth year to be nominated as a finalist.

Meanwhile, Philadelphia-based restaurateur Stephen Starr, who operates Le Diplomate in DC, was named "outstanding restaurateur". The James Beard Foundation announced last October that the awards will remain in Chicago through 2021. The Louisiana native and his restaurant group have won numerous James Beard Awards in the past, and in 2014 his Pêche Seafood Grill won the national award for Best New Restaurant.

Zachary Engel at Shaya in New Orleans was cited "rising star chef".
