Giants give Eli heads up after taking QB Webb

The New York Giants selected California quarterback Davis Webb with the 87th overall pick in the 2017 National Football League draft.

For the second consecutive year, a California Golden Bears' quarterback has been drafted. Webb had a strong Senior Bowl but is considered a project at this point by many.

"You're going to draft a quarterback that's not going to play for at least 3-4 years?"

"We think [Webb] has a high ceiling and can come in and learn the pro game", Reese said, per the New York Post. Still, the Giants did not expect Webb to still be on the board in the third round. Ben McAdoo admitted "reps are tough to come by", especially with Smith backing up Manning, but Webb is in a ideal situation with Manning as his mentor. Eli is a very smart guy and he understands the process.

General manager Jerry Reese admitted last week that he has spent more time looking at quarterbacks over the last few months than he ever has in the search for the possible long-term answer at the position.

Webb, who after his Pro Day display, said he felt he had "first-round talent", nonetheless sounded upbeat about being chosen where he was.

He's also slated to make another $400K at an upcoming Health conference by Wall Street firm Cantor Fitzgerald. Obama, 55, has kept a low profile since he left the White House in January, after two terms as president.

"We're hoping he doesn't have to be the guy that's thrown into the fire", Ross said.

Excluding the 2004 draft year, when the Giants selected Philip Rivers fourth overall out of North Carolina State and traded him to the Chargers for the first overall pick Manning, Webb is the highest Giants quarterback taken since Jeff Hostetler (59th overall, third round) in 1984 out of West Virginia.

Webb played one season at Cal after graduating and transferring from Texas Tech. The Giants hope Manning, who has made 199 consecutive regular season starts, remains healthy.

"I look at this draft and I can't believe that they're again not going to help out on the offensive line, create some more competition", O'Hara said.

"I think it's huge", McAdoo said. "It is nothing that we had to talk to him about". Manning still has three years left on his deal. He continued, "Hopefully, he can sit behind Eli for two or three years". "I'm sure he's disappointed right now that he wasn't a higher pick". But Webb, the only one drafted by the Giants, has clearly moved into the number two spot on the depth chart. Manning's contract expires following the 2019 season and, Webb could take over from there just as former Cal quarterback Aaron Rodgers sat three seasons before taking over for Brett Favre in Green Bay.
