Utah Congressman Jason Chaffetz Will Not Seek Re-Election, Per Sources

Is his work in Congress done? A small group gathered outside the building that houses his office in Provo to dance in celebration.

He's been the subject of a campaign to draft him to run for the 3rd Congressional District.

"I was as stunned as anyone to learn of Congressman Chaffetz's decision not to seek re-election or any public office in 2018", Gov. Gary Herbert said in a prepared statement. I picked up 2028 (late) as a matter of simple housekeeping BEFORE Jason called to tell me we were shutting the campaign down and not mounting a race in 2018.

While the Utah Republican, who has served in the lower chamber since 2009, said that he will be returning to the private sector, he left the door open to running for public office in the future.

Chaffetz dispelled those rumors in a statement Wednesday morning.

Chaffetz faced criticism recently from many who did not feel he used his position as chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee to investigate President Donald Trump's alleged conflicts of interest.

"Throughout his public service, he's been a reliable conservative and a strong voice for Utah", said Sen. Orrin Hatch decides to retire?

"For those that would speculate otherwise, let me be clear that I have no ulterior motives", he said. This will end his tenure as the House oversight committee chairman.

Senate, eliminates a sunset provision in the VA Choice Program and allows continued care until funds for the program are used. The program was scheduled to expire on August 7 with almost $1 billion left over.

But Chaffetz's explanation didn't stop DNC Deputy Communications Director Adrienne Watson from assuming the worst - without a shred of evidence. The lawmaker's current political calculus certainly suggests that he expects Trump's unpredictable administration to become a major powder keg before 2020.

Cox, a resident of the part of Sanpete County that falls in the 4th Congressional District, also declined to commit to a gubernatorial run - a bid Chaffetz hasn't ruled out either.

Some criticized the Utah Republican. While Chaffetz made sure to let his constituents know that he is both "healthy" and confident that he would "continue to be reelected by large margins", Chaffetz did not make any mention of the fact that he had publicly declared interest in a 2020 bid for governor of Utah just past year. But he insisted he was "confident" he would have easily won reelection, and that he has "no doubt" a Republican will represent the district. Serving is an honor and a privilege that I have never taken for granted. Donald Trump won the district by 24 points but only got 47% of the vote, in part because Evan McMullin ran an independent campaign focused nearly entirely on Utah.

Democrat Kathryn Allen, a first-time candidate, was flooded with donations after Chaffetz appeared on national television and remarked that "rather than get that new iPhone", low-income Americans may have to prioritize spending on health care. Curtis said he hasn't had time to think about the unanticipated change in the landscape.

"The very nature of bureaucracy is to cut corners and is to innocently get off track", Bovard said. It's one of the most Republican districts in the nation.

He has always been thought of as a potential candidate for governor in 2020.

Former Utah GOP Chairman Thomas Wright's name has also been floated.
