April the giraffe experiencing 'significant changes,' labor expected soon

When April goes into active labor, the baby's front hoofs will be the first to come out, followed by the snout, the zoo says. Well, apparently we all jumped the gun on 'imminent birth'.

"Keep April and our team in your positive thoughts", the park said on Facebook. It's unclear why this particular giraffe has captured the attention of the world, especially when several other zoos have successfully birthed giraffe calves in recent months without all the hype and attention.

He added that April's pregnancy is not just live entertainment, but a teachable moment and source for education. April has never lost a calf nor had a stillborn.

It's still not known exactly when April will give birth.

Jordan Patch, owner of the Animal Adventure Park, says the natural curiosity surrounding giraffes and their birthing process has been a huge factor in drawing crowds. Oliver, the father, is 5 and this is his first calf.

Giraffes are pregnant for 15 months.

Last weekend, the Animal Adventure Park said the vet was onsite and April was "out of normal behavior", like leg-lifting, pinning her ears back, and raising her tail.

April the Giraffe's pregnancy has been called the most highly anticipated pregnancy of the year.

Animal Adventure Park says giraffes spend nearly their entire day, any where from 16-20 hours a day, eating! Bulls take no part in rearing young. Thus, some believe that April's pregnancy is nothing more than a hoax.

Toys "R" Us, which has been owned by private equity firms including KKR since their 2005 buyout, won't say how much it is spending for the Giraffe Cam sponsorship rights.

A website capitalized on the video outage with a fake April Fools' Day story that claimed zoo officials admitted April was a male giraffe named Greg.

Park staff have rolled out a text alert system to update fans on the birth, when it comes - so maybe you can stop dragging your iPad to the bathroom just in case you miss something.
