MTV Movie & TV Awards eliminate gender divisions

The 2017 MTV Movie & TV Awards, hosted by actor Adam Devine, will take place at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles on 7 May (17).

While MTV had previously announced that this year they would open up their awards to both TV and streaming series along with film, they've now let fans in on the fact that the Best Actor and Best Actress categories are being axed.

Kaluuya is also nominated for the "next generation" award along with Riz Ahmed (The Night Of, Rogue One, Girls); This Is Us' Chrissy Metz; Insecure's Issa Rae and Black-ish's Yara Shahidi.

Logan, Beauty and Get Out will face off with Rogue One and Edge of Seventeen for movie of the year honors.

On the television side of the awards, nominations for best show went to FX's "Atlanta"; HBO's "Game of Thrones" and "Insecure"; Freeform's "Pretty Little Liars"; Netflix's "Stranger Things"; and NBC's "This is Us".

Supporting stars Allison Williams and Lil Rel Howery both earned well-deserved nods for Best Villain and Best Comedic Performance respectively, while Kaluuya and Howery earned a spot in the Best Duo category.

This means the nominations, which were revealed today, see Game of Thrones' resident Queen of Dragons, Emilia Clarke, compete for the TV show prize against Stranger Things' 13-year-old star Millie Bobby Brown.

Horror film Get Out is now leading nominations with a total of six nods, while the live action remake of Beauty And The Beast and Netflix sci-fi series Stranger Things are both on four.
