A man stole an ambulance from two EMT workers Thursday evening, then drove into them - killing one and leaving the other hospitalized at Jacobi Medical Center.

Police say Gonzalez was charged with three counts of murder, grand larceny, and driving while intoxicated. Gonzalez started to walk away, but then turned back, went around Arroyo and got into the driver's seat of the ambulance.

The man put the ambulance into reverse, striking Arroyo, who fell and got caught beneath the wheels, police said.

A passing police officer apprehended the suspect, aged 25, with the help of a bystander.

She was the mother of several children and was dating and FDNY paramedic.

Nigro said the EMTs stopped the ambulance and got out to investigate near an intersection in the Morris Park section.

The FDNY medic was rushed to Jacobi Medical Center where she was nearly immediately pronounced dead.

The second EMT, also a woman, suffered minor injuries in the incident which took place shortly after 7 p.m., de Blasio said.
