"But I think Ms. Chowdhury's involvement is limited to the official matters [of the related child care home in North Bengal] and she is not directly involved in child trafficking", he said.

The state Criminal Investigation Department (CID) arrested Juhi Chowdhury, general secretary of the BJP's women's wing in the state from the Indo-Nepal border late on Tuesday night. She was arrested from Batasi area under Kharibari police station in Siliguri sub-division.

Chowdhury said that the investigation would bring out the truth whether she was involved in the racket.

With Chowdhury's arrest, four persons have been arrested so far for their alleged involvement in selling of babies and children in India and overseas in the last few months from an NGO "Bimala Sishu Griho".

She was absconding since the last few days after her name came out in connection with the trafficking of at least 17 children.

Chakraborty, chairperson of Jalpaiguri-based child adoption centre Bimala Sishu Griho, was arrested with Chief Adoption Officer Sonali Mondal for selling at least 17 children through shady adoption deals.

BJP state president Dilip Ghosh had denied the allegation saying Chowdhury was being victimised as part of a larger political conspiracy. Ghosh has said those in public life support many such social causes and it was not possible to independently undertake background checks of all such NGO's who seek support.

The CID had in January received a complaint from the Central Adoption Resource Authority (CARA) about irregularities prevailing in three child care homes run by Chakraborty.
