Florida brush fire contained, residents allowed to go home

The fire is reportedly spreading east toward the Osceola County line.

Polk County Fire Rescue and Florida Forest Service are battling the fire Wednesday in the Indian Lake Estates area, near 7200 Highway 630 in Frostproof.

Now, residents are returning home, hoping they still have a home in the wake of the fire.

A brush fire in southern Polk County is threatening a handful of homes, fire officials said.

More than 2,000 acres were burned Wednesday evening and through the night.

More than 800 homes at the Indian Lake Estates retirement community in Wales, Florida, were evacuated, News6 reported. At least one house was destroyed by the fire.

"Some of the fire was over 10 feet high right on the shoulder of the road", said witness Chris Edwards, who drove through the smoke Wednesday.

Richard Jones told WTSP: 'I'm just thankful I'm still walking.

SR-60 is back open and County Road 630 is expected to open later Thursday morning. Officials say rain has helped crews, but the fire has the potential to reignite as Thursday temperatures warm up and humidity goes down.

Frazier said it's unclear how the fires started but officials will be investigating.
